Paid blogging has taken off tremendously this past year. But it has also been highly controversial. Even so, it's a fun way to earn money from home.

PayPerPost has been probably the most controversial of all the companies. Many big name bloggers have tried to tear them down as well as the bloggers who post for them. They've been responsive in many ways, and changed in ways their critics could have liked, such as requiring disclosure, but many considered it to be too little too late.

Other companies, such as ReviewMe and Blogsvertise have been less controversial. There are now a fair number of companies out there paying bloggers to post for advertisers.

Disclosure has been a huge issue. Not all companies require disclosure, and different companies prefer that you disclose in different ways. Considering how the FTC has been looking at word of mouth advertising, I would say a sitewide disclosure is the minimum you should do if you have any advertising on your sites.

Despite the controversy, I like PayPerPost best. They offer me the most flexibility and add less to the advertiser's costs than other companies do. I can look through their opportunities and find ones I am willing to blog about.

One of the controversial details has been that some companies only want a positive review, and PayPerPost allows them to ask for it. My own rule with that has been to look harder at such companies when considering accepting their opportunities. I like being able to say what's on my mind. I've never been flat out insulting, but if I see a problem I don't want to worry about what I'm saying.

The one problem with being able to choose my own opportunities is the amount of time it can take. I can spend too much time just refreshing and looking for good opps. Some days they are just plain hard to get. But I earn more this way than by waiting for companies to choose me.

Another of the big concerns people have is that people are more likely to praise companies that pay them to post about them. It's certainly a legitimate concern. And it would be very easy to sing the praises of companies you haven't tried. If you do a bit of research you can figure out if a company is worth your praise or if they've been a problem for people who have actually been there.

It's tough keeping the integrity of a blog intact when you blog for pay. My own preference is to be extremely picky about the topics I blog on, even when pay is offered. Even when high pay is offered. If the topic doesn't fit, I won't do it.

You'll see good and bad things when you look at the world of paid blogging. You'll see plenty of bloggers doing exactly what the critics say paid blogging is all about. But you'll also see brilliant, honest posts from people who have finally found a way to earn good money from their blogs.

"Search volume trends" tells you if there are very many searches for those keywords, and how the volume changes each month. It even tells you which month had the highest searches.

Free Downloadable Keyword Tool

Another free keyword research tool is Good Keywords. It is available for download at www.goodkeywords.com. After you type in your keyword, such as "dog care," the tool brings up a list of related keywords and the number of searches done on the keyword for the last month. You can then use the "menu" button to select different options, such as "copy to clipboard" or "export keyword data."

Again, time spent analyzing and choosing keywords now means more money later on. What do you need in your blog? As I see it, you've got 3 objectives: to get traffic, to get names and emails to build a list, and, of course, to make money. Let me show you how to do this. It's as simple as can be.

Of course, first you'll need a blog. You can sign up to use Blogger or WordPress. Then you'll need to come up with some content based around your business or interests. What do you include? Show your personality, put up some pictures if you'd like. I recommend writing just as you speak. Start typing away just as you would talk; keep it informal. Also, keep in mind what you write now may be on your blog for years to come and read by others. So you may also want some posts to be timeless. Just remember that. You should also write as a personal consultant or expert on your topic.

Second, create a lead capture form on the home page of your blog. You can do this by using an email autoresponder program like GetRepsonse or AWeber. You may have to pay to sign up but it's worth it . . . definitely worth it. This helps you manage your list and you can send out emails to your list whenever you like. It's like putting out an ad to your customers. It's how you communciate. YOU NEED IT (in my opinion). Then you just build a relationship with your list--and offer specials, use affiliate links, recommend your network marketing business, etc. But it's a relationship you want.

I guess I'll include a BONUS tip here. When you send out emails to your list, include those emails on your blog--and if they're good--you can submit them as articles to major article directories. I recommend doing this daily. This will give you some good content and lots of blog posts in no time. You can do this in about an hour a day once you get going.

Third, you want to make some money immediately. So what do you do? You can use Google's AdSense program or a newer program called AuctionAds. Place this ad code on your blog so that when people click on the urls you make a small amount of money. But remember the more traffic you get the more money you'll be making--it's that simple. Once you place the code, you're set. I also recommend placing the code within some of your articles--just don't overdo it. You still want to maintain a clean and professional appearance.

A blog is so simple but it's necessary in my opinion. It serves as part of the foundation of your business. So use it to create valuable content, to build a relationship, and to make money.

If you're serious about Search Engine Optimization, then one of the most important aspects is going to be building backlinks. More than any other aspect of your website except perhaps for keyword-rich content, who links to you and how popular they are affects your own page rank.

Any website can stuff a page full of keywords. But only legitimate sites--or so the reasoning goes--will actually have lots of other sites linking to them. Backlinks, then, become essential in Search Engine Optimization and website development.

But how do you go about getting them? Who are the best sites to get them from?

One of the best ways to get backlinks is just to ask for them. You might offer to exchange links, placing a link to their site on your website in exchange for a link to your site on theirs. Having strong content is another good way of increasing backlinks. People will naturally link to you if you have content that they want to recommend. Strong content is the only way to get links in SMO (Social Media Optimization, using sites such as YouTube, MySpace, and other popular 'social sites' to increase your traffic).

The best sites to get backlinks from are, of course, those who have high page ranks themselves. Some webmasters use the Google toolbar to see just how high any given site ranks, but most Search Engine Optimization experts advise against this. The toolbar is not necessarily up-to-date or even accurate.

The best way of finding sites that you want backlinks from is simply to go to a search engine (and different search engines will have different results, so do this with as many as you can) and input the search term you want. If he doesn't have that authority, he should know who does, and he should be willing to put you in touch with them. Be willing to exchange links if the website requests it, unless they're a site you wouldn't want to link to. If the site looks suspicious, don't try to get a link from them to begin with.

Requesting backlinks this way ensures that the sites that link to you will have high page rank for that keyword. And it gives you almost unlimited resources. The top 50 search results in 10 search engines will give you 500 pages to query, and that's just for that one keyword! Inputting a different keyword will no doubt change the order of sites a bit. Lower sites may rank higher, and higher sites may rank lower. Plus, it may bring up completely new sites. Some sites that rank high for "Orange County Website Design" will also rank high for "Orange County Web Design ". But some sites that rank high for "Orange County Web Design" may not have shown up at all in your quest for "Orange County Website Design". Yet both sites would provide valuable backlinks to your site, which promotes all aspects of web design services in Orange County.

Getting backlinks is a huge and time-consuming process. It is, however, one of the most valuable things you will ever do for your website's Search Engine Optimization.

This has meant even more sales and the Guru and I have basically helped each other make more money. I bring this up to point out the benefits of cultivating friends online.

The guru has sent me the odd tip from time to time and yesterday he mentioned a new program that will be starting up shortly. The program is called AGLOCO and while it is still in Beta (testing) it is due to start up in a few weeks. The premise of this program is to create a huge online Co-op of sorts. Why Wait for DMOZ? by Overdrive

Alright....I have seen and heard enough about people trying their hardest to get included in DMOZ. Some people spend a lot of time worrying about their submissions and waiting to see if they are going to get in. I want to tell everyone that they could be doing better things with their time.

Now don't get me wrong when I say that you shouldnt waste your time with DMOZ. It is a good directory and can help you in the long run. If you own a website or work for one, you only need to submit your site once. After you do that, sit back and wait to see if you will get included. If you are not aware of the time it takes to get indexed, then please let me make you aware! It can take up to one year to get included in their index. Not everyone that submits will get included in the first place. There have been rumors that some DMOZ editors do not even look at some of the submission that they receive. This means that your website could be one that just gets thrown out without any consideration. Does this seem fair to you?? I know it makes me mad and I lose the respect I once had for DMOZ. I came across a forum posting that had a DMOZ editor say that some of them pick and choose the sites that they want to review. Now, when you look at their policy, it states that the editor "will" review your site. Nowhere does it say "maybe" or "possibly".

Now that I have shown some of you that you might not even get considered in the directory, I will show you what you can do about it. Instead of sitting there worrying about your submission, why don't you just go to other directories and submit there. There are so many directories out there that can give you the same exact result as DMOZ. If you start submitting to these directories, please only submit manually. Do NOT use automated software because they are frowned upon in the search engines and in the good directories. If you do submissions everyday, then by the time you get in DMOZ, if you do, you will have many quality links to your site and your Page Rank will be a lot better. If you don't want to wait for all these directories to include your site, then there are directories that you can pay for inclusion, like yahoo and business.com. But if I were you, then I would take the time to get my site in as many good directories as I could to maximize your linking campaign.

So all in all, please do submit to DMOZ, but don't wait there or worry about them not putting you in. You have at least 3 months to wait for something to happen, if they even review your site, so make something of your time and get your linking campaign going with quality directories. There are many list out there on the web that will give you some good starts and you can take it from there. DMOZ is losing its credibility as a good directory because of the statements of some of their editors, so don't worry about them and be proactive in your link popularity campaigns!

3. Percent referred is the percentage of all sales that come from affiliates. This is a very important figure and usually coincides with the next stat. Ideally, you don't want to compete with the products where 85 to 90% of the sales are coming from affiliates.

4. Gravity may be the most important stat to gauge the competition. This figure tells you roughly how many affiliates are promoting this product. You want to sell product with little competition, you want to look for gravity numbers under 20.

Okay, putting this all together, ideally, these are the numbers you want to look for:

Dollars per sale - $25 or more
Percent per sale - 50% or more
Percent referred - Less than 70%
Gravity - Under 20

Believe it or not, these products exist. You just have to find them. When you do, you have found products that you will have a decent chance of selling, especially if you use Google Adwords and mine long tail keywords.

The #1 mistake that costs online advertisers thousands

95% of advertisers make this mistake. As discusses in my other article titled "How Google evaluates Your Adwords Campaign", Google works very differently from other search engines concerning pay per click campaigns.

So what's the #1 mistake that costs the average advertiser thousands? The answer is encompassed in two simple words - "Content Network". Google will probably never tell you this because they make too much money from unknowing novices spending more than needed, being unaware of their "Content Network".

When setting up any pay per click campaign in Google (Google Adwords), there are three main areas in which you can display your ad:

Google Search
Google Search Network
Google Content Network

Google Search and Google Search Network normally deliver relevant searchers. By default however, Google already has their Content Network checked for you on their ad set-up page. But how closely matched is the Content Network to your Adwords? Usually it's not well matched at all. You will get lots of clicks from responders to these extended relevance sites, however, the quality of this traffic is horrific at best. Not only is the traffic terrible, your click rate will be much lower when including the Content Network. What's worse, if you remember my last article, one of the key factors that affects your ad position is your "average click rate", so this can be a double negative whammy. By just de-selecting "Content Network" (in the "Edit Campaign Settings") you can significantly improve the click rate of your campaign which will then also give you better ad positioning.

Remember, the better your click rate, the higher your ad will be positioned. If your click rate drops below about 0.5%, your ad will rarely display at all. On the other hand, if you have a click rate of 2%, 3% or even higher, your ad will be positioned much higher than if evaluated by price alone.

One more negative alert - click fraud within the "content network" is much greater.

Another great way to improve your ROI and lower your cost per click is to examine where your traffic is coming from within the Google Search Network. If you determine that a lot of traffic is coming from partner sites like www.ask.com for example, you could eliminate the "Search Network" targeting as well and save some additional money. Advertising on these partner sites directly will save you about 50% for each click. The downside, of course, is that it will take more time to manage the extra campaigns. It also depends on your overall budget. The more you invest, the more it is worth looking at the option of eliminating the Search Network as well and setting up separate campaigns on sites like ask.com.

The bottom-line is that, just by de-selecting "Content Network" you will dramatically improve your results and save huge amounts of money.

Google AdWords is a great way to start getting some income. You put some ads online, pay for each click. Out of these clicks, some people will actually buy your product or the product you are referring, which causes some profits to you.

Although this seems simple, it is not that easy, that is why I am going to give you a trick. There is alot of competition on Google, and if you can't beat it, you will out of the AdWords game in no time. So how is it are you going to beat the competition?

Well it's really simple. Actually, that's the basis of the trick, you have got to keep it simple. Find a brand that might have two words in it's name, or find a combination of 2 words associated to your product. Let's say your product is called "Winner Gambler" or something of that sort. You are going to take the two words, reverse them and stick them together. In the case of my example, that would become "gamblerwinner". Now don't try this example, because it has alot of competition and you will get nowhere with it. Innovate and find something yourself.

Next thing, is once you've got your word, search it on a keyword search tool, such as Ouverture's or Google's. You will get the volume of searches and competition. Even though the search volume will most likely be relatively low. Your word is VERY targeted. So, out of the few that will click, chances are, most of them will buy the product. Just don't choose a word that has 0 searches, in that case it is just a lost cause.

The final step, is to search in Google with your word. If you see any ads on the right, you've got competition. If there is alot, pass and try to find another word. If there is little. You've got a winning combination.

Go and create your campaign on Google AdWords, if you have an account. If you don't, create one, and then create a keyword based campaign. In it you will use the word you have found.
